Cubsight Program

Description:

Although a part of the Louisiana Lions Eye Foundation, the Cubsight program is a project unto itself. Where the LLEF is the financial arm of Louisiana Lions, Cubsight is an active arm.

Using state-of-the-art technology that detects amblyopia, commonly known as lazy eye, Lions members themselves are able to non-intrusively screen the eyes of preschool children from ages 1 to 6 at no charge. The results of those screens are sent to the doctors of the LLEF for evaluation. If those doctors detect a problem, the parents are notified to take the child to the family optometrist for further evaluation. As always, if the family is in financial difficulty, the Lions aid in providing the optomitist and treatment for whatever the cause may be. In the 2013-2014 fiscal year, over 22,000 children were screened, with only 20% being referred for evaluation, but that is 20% with a chance at sight. Why Cubsight, in a vast majority of those referrals, there was no indication to the parents of a vision impairment.

Lions Club Cubsight. Ensuring a brighter tommorrow for our children.

If you feel that your children between 12 and 60 months need eye care and you are unable to afford these services, first contact your local Lions Club to see if that club is a participating club. If they are not, contact the Eye Foundation to be referred to a participating club in your area. An application will be filled out with you by a club member then sent to the main office to see if you meet the Federal guidelines for indigent care. Your application will then be processed and you will be contacted by the Foundation!€™s Patient Coordinator or from the participating clinic in your area to set up an appointment.
