Description:

The Southwest Louisiana Area Health Education Center (SWLAHEC) is a nonprofit community-based agency that delivers health care information and education and supports recruitment of young adults for health careers and continuing education programs for health professionals. Funding for SWLAHEC, which covers 13 parishes in southwest Louisiana, is provided through the LSU Medical School, federal, state and local grants, sponsorships, and donations. SWLAHEC also operates the Learning Resource Center (LRC), a medical library service for health professionals in Southwest Louisiana. LRC is a partnership between SWLAHEC and the UMC O.P. Daly Memorial Library.
SWLAHEC sponsors preceptorships, summer camps and programs for graduate medical, post secondary, high school, and elementary school students and provides library services for health professionals and consumers, containing information on health care careers, health and wellness, scholarships, universities, health care statistics, professional and science materials. SWLAHEC also coordinates and conducts health promotion programs in areas such as special health services for children, HIV/AIDS awareness and prevention, diabetes care, and tobacco use and prevention, among others.
