Description:

Shreveport Parks and Recreation (SPAR) is the recreational and cultural program operated by the City of Shreveport, focused on serving the youth and adult citizens of the city. Various programs are operated at the various recreation centers. SPAR Programs are as follows:

1. Computer Program
A program designed to develop an awareness of computer knowledge to be expressed as an educational tool as well as an entertainment or recreational tool. Currently we have computer classes in four (4) recreation centers: The locations are Lakeside, Airport, Hattie Perry and Allendale/Travis Street. (Contact location nearest you for times and dates, held at various recreation center locations).

2. Late Night Basketball Hoops and Hope League
A program designed to (1) provide young adults ages 18-up a healthy, disciplined activity as an alternative to loitering and other law-breaking activities and (2) present a wide variety of workshops and scholarship opportunities to encourage the young to reflect on his present life situation and future vocational goals. The success of this program will require the cooperative effort of the police department, the school board, businesses, etc. (Summer-Months TBA)

5. City-Wide Music Program
The music program has provided aesthetic and emotional growth through the creation and performance of music for more than 830 participants. Music is an art form that has, through the years, been a source for community unification and well-being. Each individual has the opportunity to define and re-define musical talent within themselves that can be used as a vehicle to a better way of life. A broad city-wide musical program such as this lends itself to multiple ensembles such as Mixed Choir, Jazz Ensemble, Guitar Ensemble, String Ensemble and Piano. The participants performed at the three SPAR Summer Heart Fun Festivals, attended the Annual Drum Corps Festival at Northwestern State University and held recitals at Airport Park and Caddo Magnet high School. (Contact Airport Park for dates and times).

6. Baton Twirling Marching Corps
A program designed to allow large numbers of youths ranging from elementary to high school years the opportunity to learn baton twirling and disciplined marching drills and techniques for the purpose of building teamwork skills, self-esteem, and ultimately to perform for special occasions. (1 1/2 hour sessions held at various recreation center sites).

8. 3 on 3 Basketball Challenge
This is an open space street or parking lot court style play that allows male, female, young, middle-aged, old, physically handicapped, and even former professional level players to be participants. Teamed on the basis of skill, size, age, experience, and other factors.
